Office products chain Staples recently unveiled a solar power installation at its global head office in Framingham, Massachusetts.
This PV array is the 37th solar installation for Staples and brings the retailer’s total solar capacity across the country to 14 MW. That’s equivalent to powering almost 1,800 homes for a year.
The 685kW installation on the 650,000 square-foot office building in Framingham is made up of over 2,440 SunEdison solar panels. It will generate about 850,000 kWh of solar energy each year, offsetting 12,000 tons of carbon dioxide over the next two decades.

That means this installation alone will have an effect similar to removing more than 2,300 cars driving 12,000 miles per year.
SunEdison will own and operate the installation, providing power to Staples through a power purchase agreement.
“This solar power system at our global headquarters is a demonstration of Staples’ dedication to sustainability across our business,” said Mark Buckley, vice president of environmental affairs for Staples.
“Our partnership for solar energy with SunEdison provides cost-effective power and helps Staples meet its environmental goals.”
According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership list, Staples is one of the top ten renewable energy users in the country. The company uses renewable sources for all U.S. electricity needs through solar power and “green power purchases.”
