How Does Solar Pool Heating Work?

Is solar pool heating worth it?

Solar heating for pools is an economical and environmentally friendly alternative to gas and heat pump systems. The process is as follows: a pump circulates water through a filter, then to a solar collector, and finally back to the pool.

How does a solar pool heater work?

A flow control valve regulates the flow of water through the collector; if it has a sensor, the valve can automatically divert water to the collector when the collector is significantly warmer than the water in the pool.

Should I use a glazed or unglazed collector?

If only using the pool when the temperature is above freezing, or if the temperature does not fall below freezing for long periods, then an unglazed collector should suffice. Unglazed collectors are the most inexpensive option. Glazed flat-panel collectors are more efficient in colder climates, but also more expensive. These are usually used to heat water for the home.

How long do they last?

Lasting for 10 to 20 years, solar pool heating systems have a longer life than gas and heat pump pool heaters. The cost of your system depends on the amount of water in the pool, the efficiency of the system, and the amount of sunlight in your area. Once the system is installed, though, solar pool heaters have very low annual operating costs.
