On Friday, June 7, a new record for solar power output in California. At 12:59 pm, solar contributed 2,071 MW to the Californian grid.
That’s the first time solar output has exceeded 2,000 MW in the state; the peak demand that day was 36,000 MW, which means solar supplier over five percent of that state’s electricity demand.

The record was measured by the California Independent System Operator Corporation (ISO), the organisation that manages the flow of electricity across the high-voltage, long-distance power lines that account for 80 percent of the state’s power grid.
“This new record is remarkable considering the amount has more than doubled since last September when solar peaked at 1,000 megawatts,” said Steve Berberich, California ISO President and CEO.
“We are excited by this trend and expect to hit more record peaks on a regular basis,” he added.
