National drugstore chain Walgreens has announced it will partner with SolarCity to install solar power systems on 22 Colorado stores.
The 22 Walgreens stores to benefit from solar are spread across 14 cities in the state, and is part of Walgreens’ mission to reduce energy use by 20 percent by 2020.
“A strong commitment to the local community is one of our company’s core values,” said Menno Enters, director of Energy and Sustainability at Walgreens.
“SolarCity is helping us contribute to the health of the local communities we operate in by providing us with clean energy as well as contributing to the local economy in Colorado.”
Over the next two decades, the installations in Colorado will reduce over 47.5 million pounds of CO2 emissions, comparable to planting around 25,000 trees. Once 22 these PV systems are installed in the coming months, Walgreens will have solar panels on over 150 stores across the country.
“The adoption of solar by companies like Walgreens also has an economic impact in the community as it drives the growth of local jobs,” said Eric Wittenberg, SolarCity’s regional vice president in Colorado.
“Since we launched our services in Colorado in 2009, our two local operations centers in Denver and Parker now employ more than 180 people.”
